It is hard to believe that the ATM, in its present form, is 40 years old today and that it was installed in the UK and not the USA.


De La Rue developed the first electronic ATM, which was installed in Enfield Town in North London by Barclays Bank on the 27th June 1967.


ATMs are now known by various terms including automated banking machine, cash machine, hole-in-the-wall, cashpoint. In Ireland some people refer to them as “Drink Links”. What's your favourite name?
