Barry Bonds has garnerded much attention - both good and bad - for his home run accomplishments. So much so, he even received a presidential phone call, after all baseball is the all American game. But the public conversation has quickly shifted away from Bonds to the next record breaker. Speculations as to how long Bonds will hold the record and who will break it abound.
If there were continental reverberations to Bonds' record-setting swat Tuesday night – and say what you want about the man, No. 756 was a massive blow – they may have been felt most by A-Rod, who told manager Joe Torre his left knee/calf was a little too sore from a Josh Towers fastball to strap it on for the third game of this contentious Yankee-Blue Jay series last night.
A-Rod, Alex Rodriguez, is the number one candidate. This is what an ESPN number cruncher has to about the 32 year slugger:
Rodriguez has established a 21-percent chance of hitting 900 home runs -- more than Oh, even -- and a 7-percent chance of hitting 1,000 home runs.Projected Total: 790. Granted, the (adjusted) Favorite Toy probably gets less reliable the further we get from the conceivable, and it's not easy to conceive a baseball player hitting 1,000 homers.
