Mounting concern about the rising cost of the 2012 Games overshadowed a morale-boosting visit by Tony Blair to the Olympic Park on Tuesday.

The budget for the London event is predicted to overrun by £900million.

A Commons committee is expected to criticise the soaring costs on Wednesday, and tell ministers not to raid the lottery to make up for the shortfall.

Olympics minister Tessa Jowell said: 'I will be very happy to respond to the committee's report once I have studied it. We will make sure the budget is robust and completed soon. We will assess the impact on the lottery in discussion with the mayor of London.
