There is no doubt that 911 was one of the most defining moments in our generation.  It is our Vietnam, our WWII our Kennedy shooting.  It ended an era of innocence that many of us were guilty of.  There was, however, one very specific lesson which can be taken away from that morning - we are at war.  Not by choice and not because of a particular confrontation around an issue, but by people using religion to manipulate the poor into an army of hatred which keeps those very despots in power.

The war on terror's greatest chance of an end point?  When Bin-Laden and others become less important than protecting one's job, house and family.  The rise of the middle class in countries like Iraq, Iran and Afghanistan is the light of hope.

Five years later and the war has not ended.  Recent arrests in  Toronto and London show just how vulnerable we still are.  It also demonstrates just how important, unfortunately, the military offensive is.  While the economic answer is the one that will inevitably win, a show of force is the only door to opening that dialogue.

The job is not done, by any stretch.  I can only hope that on on September 11, 2011, we will only be talking about memories and not anything in the present-tense.
