The Navarro River in Mendocino County's Anderson Valley once ran year-round, supporting robust runs of coho salmon and steelhead trout. Not any more. "Twenty years ago you could swim in the river all summer, but now parts of it dry up," said Joshua Viers, a research scientist with the Environmental Science and Policy Department at UC Davis. "Coho used to run all the way up the Navarro. Now you can only find them in the lower third."
