NP Rank:
Abuse of Jucicial process
A Coast Guard officer who was accused of shooting an unarmed fisherman while pursuing him in an unlit and unidentified boat has been freed of any impending charges.
The DPP claims there is insufficient evidence despite written reports from eyewitnesses. Read the full story in the link above.
The original case was reported as follows:
1) The three poor fishermen were in a small pirogue
2) The coast guards "appeared" without any lights or identifying
themselves by calling out any warnings and started chasing the
fishermen
3) The fishermen thought they were thieves (pirates) and started to speed away
(as any logical person in Trinidad would)
4) The coast guards rammed the fishermen boat from behind, boarded and
fired and killed Mohammed
5) The coast guard kept the pirogue, admitted to finding no drugs or
ammunition (as they said they suspected this)
6) All calls for independent inspections by a third party by the
fishermen's lawyers for rejected.
7) The coast guard issued a report that Allum was correct in killing
the fisherman.
