SEOptimum_com | Getting listed in the Open Directory
A while back I got a email from a guy claiming to be a DMOZ editor saying that I had to pay him $5,000.00 or he would have my site: shoemoney.com removed from the dmoz.
I thought nothing of it…. then today I got a email from him saying it was removed and I might want to rethink not paying him. I thought I would check just for grins.

It was removed… WOW

The DMOZ mob strikes again...

So I posted something like that in the commentthread to the above post, and I added a note to Shoemoney’s URL in DMOZ asking why the URL was removed.

Now pay attention: within 36 hours after doing that, my account was disabled!

I’d put quite some work into that account; I was editing 9 categories at the time my account was disabled. I did NOT put all that hard work into it for some meta to come along and ban me on sight when he sees something he doesn’t like, without sending ANY email or other notification.

Rumours about the Open Directory Project beeing corrupt has been going on for long, here is a blog from 2004 (whether fake or not, noone knows):

Corruption is Rampant - Get Yours or Get out

That is the story in a nutshell. I was forced into this position by the liars and hypocrites above me who were corrupt. Now I am corrupt and find that I fit into the DMOZ culture better now than when I was honest.

I'm going to tell you everything I have done. I'm going to give you a blow by blow of every DMOZ inclusion I am paid to make. I will tell you how I shake people down, and punish those who refuse to pay me.

And how I must pay someone above me a cut of everything I take.

Despite DMOZ has an abuse report site it's not trivial to find. The about page, the main help page, the general FAQ does not link there.

I think that after  November 16th 2003 DMOZ is not too important any more. Many cry for Google to drop DMOZ -- I agree.
