Al Gore's Electric Bill, Carbon Credits, and A Lesson In Economics
For a political ideology obsessed with free markets, the American Right displayed little understanding of the concept this week when it trumpeted a headline from TennesseePolicy.org. The right-wing media machine picked it up and within moments the banner headline from Drudge Report to Townhall read "GORE MANSION USES 20X AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD; CONSUMPTION INCREASE AFTER 'TRUTH'."But that is only half of the story. Predictably, it is the half that makes Al Gore look bad.
While the Bush Administration has ignored, deflected, and delayed untold thousands of environmental policies and programs, Gore and many other members of the environmentalist movement have adopted them voluntarily. One such program makes use of the buying and selling of "Carbon Credits" to offset the environmental impact of certain activities including the ownership and operation of Gore's large home and private jet.
In the end, the spin and smear against Gore is unfounded. His activities are carbon neutral. Typically, however, the conservative slander-sheets have chosen to publish half-truths rather than take the time to educate and inform their readership.

Can you say Al Gore? … I knew you could.
It is not enough that Al Gore, during the Oscar telecast, got everyone on camera (almost) to say the word CRISIS when they were hammering home the less than truthful message of his Oscar award winning lecture … ahh! … errr! … “Documentary”.
No, the seas are NOT going to rise 20 feet but the Gore household uses at least twelve (12) times the electricity than the average American household while he pursues the Nobel Peace Prize --- in his private jet!
Ooops, this must be a slander, I supposed the citizens of China and Russia are as concerned about being carbon neutral as Al Gore - and really, how does one prove this hypothesis.

One could start by reading the article instead of just responding to a strawman. I never even mentioned the Oscars. Drop the talking points and try to have a serious conversation.

I wonder how many carbon credits the right-wing media would have to buy to offset the cubic miles of hot air, oilfields worth of electricity production needs and forests of waste paper created in their feigned outrage over Gore's electric usage. They don't want a central government approach to greenhouse gas reduction, and now it's clear they don't want a free-market approach either. It's obvious they just want to pollute the discussion with a thick enough smokescreen for them and their willfully ignorant adherents (see the first comment in this thread) to pretend that there simply is no problem.

I thought "An Inconvenient Truth" documentary was quite educational. The movie makes it crystal clear that we all need to work to address global warming -- now, before it is too late. Regarding how much energy Al Gore's home does or does not consume, I'll leave that important life altering fact to those who most certainly don't live in glass houses. In the meantime maybe the rest of us could get focused on the message, not the messenger!

Orwell was right: you can change the language until you change behavior, ie. "GORE MANSION USES 20X AVERAGE HOUSEHOLD; CONSUMPTION INCREASE AFTER 'TRUTH'." By demonizing good, serious, sincere environmentalists, the political right and its allies are attempting to make it impossible for people to hear environmentalists.
In the mean time "Rome" is burning. It is interesting that Johnson said his group got its figures from Nashville Electric Service. But company spokeswoman Laurie Parker said the utility never got a request from the policy center and never gave it any information That being said when I first heard this I was dismayed, Carbon Neutral seems like a "lame" better then nothing solution, however he would of been better served had he made his house an example by adding sufficent alternative energy solutions.

Why would anyone want to "buy" carbon credits. The most effective way to "clean" the environment is to stop or decrease what is being done. It's just alot of political smoke and mirrors not amounts to nothing but the mind set of poor economics. Oh...wait a minute.....maybe it isn't poor economics. The company that Tipper and Al are "buying" their "carbon credits" is...ummm...what's the name....Generation Investment Management LLP....that's it. Oh....and who happens to be the Chairman of the Board....go check.........sounds like someone is just paying themselves......it's just politics as usual.....or it could be unusual politics....who knows. A positive effect on the environment would to be to decrease activities that may produce the CO2 level.

Hypocrites!
George Clooney, Al Gore and the Private Jet Socialists love to tell those of us who are of average means how we must make sacrifices in order to save the planet. How about they stop flying in private jets, running around town in limos and heating huge homes (complete with heated outdoor pools and built-in air conditioning) and just maybe I will give them a audience. I am sick and tired of being told to "do as I say and not as I do". Until then....STFU!!!

Rich people had the same thing in the middle ages. It's called paying
for penance. You just hire poor people to say your "Hail Mary's" and
"Our Fathers" and you could keep right on sinning with no worries.
Carbon credits are like voodoo. In fact I tend to agree with what PETA
recently said. Animals cause more global warming gas productions than
anything. You cannot be a meat eating environmentalist. So in order to
do the most good instead of buying credits Al Gore should be staying
home in a 2 bedroom house and eating only vegetables he grows in his
back yard.
How much greenhouse gas was consumed flying caviar to all the Oscar
night parties? How much did Al Gore spend on his Armani suits instead
of giving all this money to a charity? How many of Al Gore's personal
appearances could be conducted via satellite link instead of jetting
all over the globe? How much will be consumed flying rock bands to five
continents for his planned "Live Earth" concerts? How much Evian will
be flown to Antarctica to meet 100 rock musician's celebrity contract
riders?
Hypocrisy surrounds global warming on all sides and Al Gore is the poster child for this hoax.
