NP Rank:
Altered Barbie Dolls Head For San Francisco
The call is out to artists everywhere to send their submissions to the Fifth Annual Altered Barbie Show in San Francisco from July 29 to August 20, 2007.
The exhibition is green this year, featuring re-used and re-cycled Barbie and Ken dolls (some of them may actually BE green), to explore, re-interpret, re-assemble and review what has been a major pop culture icon for many years.
Artists are relieved at the news that altered Barbies and companions have legally been declared to be parodies in the U.S. and are therefore exempt from both copyright and trademark laws. The decision came after years of litigation with Mattel, the maker of Barbies. The juried exhibition and sale will include a number of categories, including mixed media, painting, performance art, film and video.
