SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is rolling out the next-generation of its Opteron server-chip, the processor that helped spur the company's revival from an also-ran to a more serious threat to Intel Corp.

The release of the processor that powers big corporate servers intensifies the battle between AMD. AMD is betting on more market share gains with the second-generation Opteron chip as Intel looks to woo customers with a new product it released in late June.
