America doesn't care about softwood lumber -- Left Coast Leaner
Any Americans ever heard about the softwood lumber dispute??
I have been saying for weeks now that the American media haven't payed one bit of attention to Canada's legitimate beef with everyone's favorite Empire.
For all that don't know, which must be most Americans, the US charged Canada undue tarrifs for their softwood lumber exports over a number of years. In total, Canada paid the US $4.1 billion ($5 bil CAN) that they never really owed them.
Or so the canucks say. Seems there's a pesky little treaty called NAFTA, which the US essentially forced Canada to sign back in 1992 when Bush I was the emporer. Hmmm... free trade.
But the US maintains that they are within their rights to charge those tarrifs based on the rules of the WTO.
Mexico is also none too pleased with America's bullying trade policies. They have some beef over sugar exports. But they have sided with Canada.
When this whole thing started up, I started browsing American news sources but there wasn't beans to find, so I got sick of it. I guess there has been a little more coverage now that Mexico has weighed in, and Prime Minister Paul Martin finally called up Dubs and said, politely, "Quit fuckin' us over, schmuck."
Nevertheless, no one really cares in the US. I suppose they have other things to worry about like an illegal war and record hurricane season. But the Canadians are pissed off and they should be. 5 billion bones is nothing to shake a stick at, pun painfully intended. The US needs to honor its own agreement, bottom line. What a bunch of chumps.
