On June 27, Israeli writer Amos Oz was awarded Principe de Asturias award. This is the most prestigious spaniard award or Spanish Nobel. Oz has internationally been recognised as an intellectual and a pacifist. He advocates for a peaceful settlement and historical compromise between Palestinians and Israelis. In his writing, Oz severely criticises fanaticism and violence.

In a statement, Fundación Principe de Asturias hailed Amos Oz as one of the masters of modern Hebrew prose.   In the past, the Principe de Austurias prize - worth 50,000 euros - has been awarded to Juan Rulfo, Mario Vargas Llosa, Camilo José Cela, Carlos Fuentes, Günter Grass, Doris Lessing, Arthur Miller, Susan Sontag and Paul Auster

rahul, this is Good Stuff. Oz definitely is one of the great literary minds of Israel - current and past. And, as is common in Israeli society, Oz has also taken a stand on political issues and is an ardent supporter of peace and compromise while still maintaining a deep allegiance to Israel and Zionism.
