About the video
This video features a short 3 minute version of Andy Hamilton's classic tune Silvershine and it was filmed at the Drum Arts Centre in Aston, Birmingham on Andy's 88th Birthday.
The pianist is Sam Brown playing on what was the last occasion he played with the band (he may turn out again but such events are few and far between now). WW2 veteran Sam who stayed in Britain after the war was one of the first recruits to Andy's band when Andy came to Britain in 1950. The other Sax player is multi-instrumentalist Dutch Lewis and if you watch carefully you can even see a couple of Andy's grandchildren running accross in front of the stage.
About Silvershine
The story is that Andy penned the song for the actor Errol Flynn when he was working as Musical Director on Errol Flynn's yacht, the Zaca, in Jamaica. Over the years the tune disappeared from Andy's repertoire only to come back to him in his 70s, whilst in a diabetic coma.
The tune then became the title track of Andy's first album which was released in 1990 and was the best selling UK Jazz album of that year.
