Another Victory Against a Landfill in New Orleans East Community
Following up on the see-saw struggle of the New Orleans East Community against the city's attempt to make it the illegal massive dumpsite for hundreds of millions of pounds of (still festering) hurricane debris:
The predominantly Vietnamese community in New Orleans East organized an exemplary citizen-based campaign and so far has successfully stopped the illegal dumping initiated by the City of New Orleans and Waste Management, Inc., the corporate giant of debris removal and management, who got the contract for disposing of the colossal amount of trash left by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita last year. After successfully pressuring the city not to re-open the illegally designated landfill on a fragile wetlands bordering their community. Waste Management Inc. filed a civil lawsuit, attempting to force the city to allow them to continue their illegal dumping. On October 13th, a civil court judge rejected this request. Here is an original local story in the mainstream new orleans paper follows up on this civil verdict.
The organizing and citizen based recovery of this community in New Orleans East is a lesson in unity, organizing and the strength of numbers and community unity.
