Lieutenant-General J.C.M. Gauthier, Commander Canadian Expeditionary Force Command and the Chief of Staff of Regional Command South preside over the Change of Authority ceremony from Major-General T.J. Grant, Commander Joint Task Force Afghanistan Roto 3 to Brigadier-General J.R.M.G. Laroche, Commander Joint Task Force Afghanistan Roto 4 at the Kandahar Air Field.

About 2500 members of the Canadian Forces (CF) are currently serving as part of Joint Task Force Afghanistan. They play a key role in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission whose goal is to improve the security situation in Afghanistan and assist in rebuilding the country.

Canada is in Afghanistan at the request of the democratically elected government, along with 36 other nations, and as part of a UN-sanctioned mission to help build a stable, democratic, and self-sufficient society.

Au cours d'une brève cérémonie tenue aujourd'hui à Kandahar, le Brigadier-général Guy Laroche a pris le commandement de la Force opérationnelle en Afghanistan. Il assure la relève du Major-général Tim Grant, qui quitte l'Afghanistan après avoir commandé la Force opérationnelle pendant neuf mois.

La contribution des FC à la Force opérationnelle en Afghanistan (FOA) est d'environ 2 500 militaires provenant d'unités à travers le pays. Les éléments principaux sont le groupement tactique, des éléments de support variés, les équipes de liaison et de mentorat opérationnel (ELMO), et une Équipe de reconstruction provinciale qui est aussi supporté par des fonctionnaires d'Affaires étrangères du Canada, de l'Agence canadienne de développement international et de la Gendarmerie royale du Canada
