Arcade Fire Lights up Deer Lake Park
Montreal's humble mega alt band rocked Burnaby on Thursday evening. I have to preface this entry by admitting that I'm not a music critic by any stretch, and judging by the fans at Deer Lake Park last night nor am I among the hard-core Arcade Fire fans. I count myself among the many who appreciate what's going on with this band - the tension, the layers and the sheer inventiveness that they bring to a pre-packaged pop world. I got the ticket at the last minute and I was hoping that lifting the veil and seeing them live would hold up to what I've heard from the band.
So how does the tension hold up on stage in the idyliic setting of Deer Lake? In a word... brilliantly. Every member of the band holds a palpable individual stage presence that is as idiosyncratic and energetic as the music itself. Not to mention that any band that travels with a full-on pipe organ earns a shout. If you haven't checked this band out live, do so... and if you can do it in a more intimate setting, jump at the chance. This band believes in their music and by the end of the first song you will too.

Did they move into the crowd for their last song? I wondered if they'd do that for an ourdoor venue, since seeing them at the PNE Forum (they've done that at theatres and concert halls as well).

No stage dive last night... in one of the more frenzied percussive moments two of them were climbing the space frame and literally playing the stage...
