RACISM against new migrant workers must be tackled by politicians immediately, the head of the Commission for Racial Equality has warned after a tripling in complaints about discrimination towards people from eastern Europe.

Ali Jarvis, the director of CRE Scotland, said ministers must act to address tensions between Scots and immigrants before the problem gets out of hand.

In the last year alone, the CRE Scotland has seen inquiries relating to eastern Europeans go up from eight to 26. Branches of the Citizens Advice Bureau have also seen a rise in reports of mistreatment of migrant workers seeking jobs and places to live.
