Tearing Down of the Berlin Wall

The day the Berlin Wall fell was a major day in the world's history. An icon of the Cold War, the Wall stood for tragedy, family separation, and as a reminder of a gallant U.S. airlift to feed hungry people.

No one would ever have imagined that the Berlin Wall would become an art statement that artists are struggling to save. Standing as a monument to personal impressions of the Cold War, the Wall now is under siege from age, the elements, and tourists who want to take home a chunk of repression history.

One of Germany's most beloved tourist attractions is crumbling.

The Berlin Wall has been battered by age, the elements, souvenir-hunting tourists and commercial development. This once-detested symbol of the Cold War and a divided nation is desperately in need of a makeover.

Now a group of artists is trying to keep the most iconic part of the Communist-era barrier standing.

Indeed, like every building, the Berlin wall also ages... And there are lots of tourists touching the wall and even painting on it, since it's not protected in a museum but open air.

What a fascinating story- the Berlin Wall was so much more than a wall, and its remains are a reminder of a very different Berlin that none of us are very far from.
