Twenty-two years from today, also on a Friday the 13th, an asteroid 360 feet longer than the battleship USS Alabama will skirt past the Earth - so close it likely will pass between the planet and the satellites that carry our communications.

The asteroid Apophis, named for the ancient Egyptian god of destruction, will come so close that the Earth's gravitational field could shift the giant rock's path enough to become a collision hazard on its next pass in 2036.
