BC Leading The Way In Renewable Energy: False.

Raincity Studios has recently launched the site Take Back The Power for our client, COPE 378. Along with the many active voices in this city and province, communicating thoughts and ideas about changing the way people think and view our energy and environment, we're hoping to contribute to the cause as well via the site's community blog.

This morning's Metro Daily Paper's front page had an article on Sunday's rally in Kitsilano that protested the BC government in their initiative of impending doom to construct BC's very first, and second!, coal-burning electrical plants - somewhat archaic, no?

What does it mean?:

  • The over 200-megawatt plants would pump out the equivalent of an extra 300,000 cars on the road in greenhouse gases at 1.8 million tonnes
  • Employment for 140 people
  • The plants would generate enough power for about 170,000 homes
  • Plants will be in operation by 2010 if granted the environmental assessment certificate - perfect timing while our "green" province will be under the largest global microscope
  • BC has coal reserves at an estimate of 100 times more than the province's total energy needs for the next 120 years
  • Suzuki was there - he believes climate change will be the definitive issue in the next federal election: 'bout time

I agree with rally organizer Donald Gordon - it's embarrassing.

The article was written by Jeff Hodson - there currently is no link from their site, but you can download it from the homepage under the Vancouver heading.
