Berlin " Knuts" for polar bear cub

Berlin's youngest celebrity made a debut today at the zoo. Knut, the polar bear cub who was abandoned by his mother last year was recently involved in a scandal, when a German animal-rights activist, Frank Albrecht, was quoted saying that he thought the zoo should kill the bear, as feeding it by hand was inhumane. Knut was very happy today as he padded around all of his three-and-a-half month old self.

Albrecht's assertion prompted quick condemnations from the zoo, politicians and other animal-rights groups.

Knut stole the heart of Berliners after he was born in December but rejected by his mother Tosca. A bearded zookeeper moved into the enclosure to look after him round the clock.
