Beyond Cruel and Unusual Punishment
Christopher Newton was executed almost two hours after the scheduled time of his execution. He had received the death sentence for killing his prison cellmate, choking and beating him after an argument over a chess game.
The execution team stuck the condemned man more than 10 times to insert shunts to deliver the chemicals meant to kill him. The preparation for the execution took so long, at one point, Christopher Newton asked for a bathroom break, which was granted.
Prison officials blamed the difficulty on Newton's size. He was six feet tall and weighed 265 pounds.
