The ethanol produced from inedible plants will produce 70 to 90 percent less carbon dioxide than gasoline. Ethanol made from corn produces 20 to 40 percent less carbon dioxide than gasoline, said Hideaki Yukawa, chief researcher at the research group. Increased amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has been linked to global warming.
