This is really awful. A woman's body has been found in the woods behind a well-known Kitsilano highrise condominium. The building is a landmark because it has olive panels on the outside and residents often cover their windows with tinfoil in the summer to block the sun because apparently the windows don't open. The area behind this building is really wild and untamed - lots of blackberry and raspberry bushes, and a road that feels like a country road - and it leads underneath the Burrard Bridge. It is a strange urban zone - not altogether unpleasant, as it feels rural although it is right in the middle of the city. But it is also slightly freaky as an urban zone, and this event certainly contributes to that impression...

A routine break-and-enter call for Vancouver police turned tragic after officers discovered a body behind a Kitsilano highrise early yesterday.

When officers arrived they found a woman's body in the bushes on 1450 Chestnut," Const. Tim Fanning said.

I was wondering where this took place.  I saw the headlines.  That is disputed CN / indigenous land I believe.  There are always a lot of homeless people sleeping there.

This is scary.  Vancouver is not as safe as people believe.

This is scary - but Vancouver is 20 times safer than a lot of large North American cities.

I moved here from Atlanta, Georgia, a city with a very high crime rate.
Murders got buried in the back of the paper, because so many happened
every day. This is still making major headlines here in Vancouver.
Unfortunately, our city is not immune to violent crimes, and I feel so
awful every time I see things like this happening. But, at the same
time, we do not have 10+ murders occurring every day. So, I still
feel very safe in Vancouver. You just have to be aware of your
surroundings and take all the precautions you can. I think we are pretty lucky in our city. And the city population is growing, so there is more likely to be more violent crimes.

Unfortunately, you can't avoid everything, unless you want to be a hermit.

I walked by the crime scene this evening. From my vantage point it seemed that the police had cleared the scene and it was open for public access...however I did see two police officers in the vicinity (one was identified as CSU) and they appeared to be going in to the neighbouring apartment buildings.
