Bomb Scare at Ohio State University
Several buildings were evacuated this morning at the Ohio State University, in Columbus, Ohio. Though no official statement has been released, eye witness accounts from the scene indicate that there was a suspicious package discovered in the Baker Systems Engineering Building.
None of the police officers I spoke to would give me any additional information, but a local news site is reporting that the bomb squad was called in and detonated the package at around 11:20am. By noon most of the yellow tape had been removed, but as of 10 minutes ago there were still police cars surrounding the north entrance to Baker Systems. That entrance alone remains cordoned off.
Attached are photographs from the scene. I wrote a more fragmented play-by-play article here at my newsvine.com column.
Update - 1:35 pm
I just got off the phone with the Columbus Fire Department who explained what happened:
The Columbus Bomb Squad was called in because a suspicious metallic box was left in a stairwell in Baker Systems. The box had tools and such inside and was described to me as similar to a repair kit. As a precautionary measure, three buildings (Dress Labs, Campbell Hall and Baker Systems) were evacuated and the bomb squad remotely detonated the box. No explosive elements were found and there was no threat called in or anything like that. The situation was resolved with no injuries and the case is considered closed.

Wow, thanks for the warm welcome everyone. I've just gotten off the phone with the fire department and updated the story accordingly. It looks like basically a false alarm with basic precautionary measures taken. I don't expect to make any further updates to this story.
