I Don't Like Mondays was a UK number one single for four weeks in July 1979. Written by Bob Geldof

The Boomtown Rats (1975-1986) was a punk rock / New Wave group led by Bob
Geldof.

All six members were originally from Dún Laoghaire, Ireland. The name Boomtown Rats comes from a gang in Woody Guthrie's autobiography, Bound for Glory. They became known as a notable band whose record is overshadowed by the charity work of their lead singer.

Liam, as one of the NowPublic editors, I’ve flagged your item as Incomplete.

There is nothing new in your item, and newness is the essence of news.

For example: you might have discovered (as I did, by looking at Wikipedia) " that in 2005, the band's albums were all remastered
and re-released, a 'Best Of' compilation was released, and two live
DVDs were put on sale, fuelling some minor speculation that the band
was planning a reunion, perhaps to be timed with Live 8. These rumours
were shattered, however, when Cott, Roberts, Crowe and Fingers all sued
Geldof, claiming that he had withheld money owed to them from the sale
of the Boomtown Rats records. The matter is expected to be settled in
court in 2006."

What happened to that lawsuit in 2006? telling me that is news, and news is what we're about.

Please feel free to write your own comment in response, but first check out NowPublic news values and what you can do to make your stuff better.

That's a great story, but after checking there is no news about it yet. The
news lies within the words of the song. I am troubled by the word Shoot. and I am
trying to find out what was in Sir. Bob's mind when he wrote this. Its a very
powerful performance. as you can see.

Bob Geldof has been named as the celebrity that most teenagers admire,
according to a poll for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. The Irish rock star turned
campaigner was picked by 19% of those questioned in a survey on role models to
mark the 50th anniversary of the scheme.

Olympic gold winning athlete Dame Kelly Holmes came second with 18%,

while Sir Richard Branson was third with 16%.

Sir Bob's challenge to G8 leaders: over to you

Where do the eight politicians stand on
the key issues at Wednesday's meeting?

With the rubbish cleared from Hyde Park and other
venues around the world and the music fast becoming a mellow memory, the focus
shifts to the eight men with the power to decide Africa's fate when they meet at
the Gleneagles hotel in Perthshire this week. Musicians and politicians called
at the concert for justice for Africa. The leaders of eight of the world's
wealthiest countries are capable of delivering. But do they all want
to? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Bob
has recently recorded two tracks on the upcoming Jools Holland collaboration

chrisboy has sent you a
message via NowPublic.com:

Just reading through your piece on the song 'I Dont like Mondays', and you
asked why Bob used the word 'shoot' in the song. I agree its a powerful song,
and remains so today, almost 28 years later. The song is recognised almost
worldwide at this stage.

The Boomtown Rats were at a US radio station for an interview when the story
of Brenda Spencer came over the news wire. The 16 year old California high
school student made headlines when she grabbed her father's gun and opened fire
on her school from a house across the street, injuring eight students and
killing the school's principal and custodian. When later asked why she'd gone on
the shooting spree, she responded "I don't like Mondays."

Brenda Ann Spencer (born April 3, 1962 in San Diego,
California
, United States) wounded
eight children and one police officer and killed two adults in a shooting spree
at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in the San Carlos section of San Diego,
California
, on Monday, January 29, 1979.

The school was across the street from her house. She used the rifle she had recently been given
for Christmas from her father. When the six-hour incident ended and the
sixteen-year-old was asked why she had committed the crime, she shrugged and
replied, "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." She also said: "I had
no reason for it, and it was just a lot of fun," "It was just like shooting
ducks in a pond," and "(The children) looked like a herd of cows standing
around, it was really easy pickings."

She pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and assault with a
deadly weapon
, and was sentenced to prison for 25 years to life, currently being
served at The California
Institution for Women
in Corona. She has
been eligible for parole four times and has been
turned down each time, the last in 2005. Spencer will be eligible for parole
again in 2009.

In 2005, she claimed that she was drunk and under the influence of
PCP
at the time of the shootings and also that her father, Walter Spencer, had
sexually abused her as a child (a claim she did not make during the earlier
years of her incarceration). She has also claimed that the state and her
attorney conspired to hide her drug test results.

On 23
January
2006, the
British broadcaster
Channel 4
screened a documentary titled I Don't Like Mondays. It spoke to members
of the Spencer family, including Brenda's father, who had never before spoken
publicly about the events twenty-six years earlier. He denies being responsible
for the shooting and says that he has absolutely no knowledge of the accusations
his daughter made against him in 2005. To this day, he continues to visit her
every Saturday afternoon, when possible.[citation needed]

Spencer's crime, lack of remorse, and inability to provide a serious
explanation for her actions when captured inspired the song "I Don't
Like Mondays
" by The Boomtown Rats,
written by musician Bob Geldof.
