UK emergency services are mounting a major rescue operation after hundreds of people became trapped in their workplaces by rising flood waters in Sheffield.

People stranded inside buildings told reporters how they had watched helplessly as walls were demolished and cars swept away by torrents of water raging outside.

Police said 25 people were trapped inside their cars on Brightside Lane.

The BBC are now reporting that at least three people have died: A 28-year-old man died in Hull after becoming stuck in a drain despite the attempts of rescuers to free him. In Sheffield, a body has been found after a 13-year-old boy was swept away in a river. 68-year-old man died getting out of his car in flood water.

Thousands of tons of water are being pumped out of a dam amid fears it could burst under the pressure of torrential rains, forcing residents to evacuate the area.

There appears to be no end in sight to the chaos as the floods have claimed two more victims bringing the total to six. The Met. Office have issued a warning of more severe weather.

Updated: 20:00, Friday June 29, 2007: A woman's body has been recovered from a fishing lake in Newark, bringing the death toll from this week's floods to six. I really hope that this is the last update but  as forecasters have issued a severe weather warning for the weekend this is unlikely.

Hello everyone ... this story developed a life of its own. I thought that I had deleted it. I was aware of the spelling error and a few other problems and I was planning to correct them off-line (it is a pity that there is not a facility to hide a story). When I tried to re-publish my broadband connection died. Eventually when I do manage to get online I discover that the story is still online and the spelling error had been corrected.
