Britain faces a severe risk of another terrorist attack, the government said Tuesday as it launched the country's first public terror alert system.

The threat rating — based on a U.S. Department of Homeland Security model — was reported on the Web sites of the Home Office and the domestic spy agency MI5.

Several commentators here in the UK have pointed out that the alert level is likely to remain high for the foreseeable future, since there's absolutely nothing to be gained by lowering the level (and since the last time the previous system's alert level was lowered, we immediately had bombs exploding on the underground and a London bus).

the terror barometer here and in the US is really just a method for organizing local police/rescue resource, it has no use to the general public.  unless the government tells me to stay indoors because it's raining missiles, i don't see its raising/lowering affecting my daily life.
