Burrard Bridge Spans The Test of Time
July 1, 1932 ribbon cutting ceremony officially opened the Burrard Street Bridge. This bridge has been in service for 75 years as of July 1, 2007. Unfortunately the disasterous collapse of the bridge in Minnesota that was built in the 60's, does not compare to the Burrard Bridge that's still going strong today. Question: Was the construction not up to standards? There are bridges throughout the world that have survived earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes and floods, and they are still in use today. Maybe we can learn something about engineering and construction techniques of bridges in general. Let's hope the Burrard Bridge is in use for another 75 years. bobbyflash, very interesting point...the Lions Gate Brdige is also of a similar age, so either construction standards decreased over the years, maintenance was done properly on the bridge in Minnesota or they just didn't build it right. the shocking thing though is of the 600,000 brdiges in America 78,000 have the same designation as the bridge in the Minnesota. Good Stuff.
