George W. Bush has sunk below Richard Nixon and could break Harry Truman's record for persistent unpopularity among modern U.S. presidents.
The latest Gallup Poll found that Bush's popularity had been below 40 percent for six consecutive quarters, the Dallas Morning News reports. Nixon ended his five-quarter streak by resigning in 1974.

and congress is even lower... Does anyone in Washington really want to earn our respect anymoe? Republicans have dismal ratings. Democrats even lower. We need to stop voting parties and start voting ideas. Maybe even think for ourselves instead of letting the newspapers and main stream networks decide for us.

Nixon was a smart guy, but a drunk. Bush gave up liquor but is dumb as mud. Right now, I'd take a drunk Nixon over a sober W.

Regardless of politics, it's sad when we want drunks and womanizers over sober and committed.
Also, the comments about intelligence. No president who has ever gotten to office can fairly be called dumb. They wouldn't have gotten there had they really been dumb. (Don't forget W had higher test scores than Kerry in college, military...) All because we don't like thier politics doesn't make someone dumb... I've noticed that I only see this name-calling coming from one side of the political aisle.

We can agree to disagree on the qualities of "commitment," "intelligence" and "fairness" surrounding our current president and the circumstances of his entry into the office. Obviously, the irony of my remark wasn't clear. It was a moan of despair for Gonzales, Cheney, et al. I'll add emoticons next time :) I think it's fairly clear that I REALLY didn't want a drunk womanizer who happens to be long dead to replace a live president, nor that I admire Nixon. Just a figure of speech.
But I can certainly attest to many former supporters of W in my own circle who now say "Poor George," "He just can't help it," and one friend who did use the word "Dumb." Name-calling, indeed and from the right of the aisle.

True...Now, we will probably agree that his committment, while it is strong, hasn't exactly led to the best decision making.... hope I didn't give the impression that I was a blanket supporter, not... Don't like the way the war is handled, don't like open borders, don't like spending like a liberal... is there a word limit in these posts?
Do you think we will ever get a president, or anyone in washington for that matter, who actually does at least most of what he says? The closest in my history has been Reagan. I really haven't seen anyone come close since in either party.

That's the entire problem -- that these comments are really e-mails postings and that any substantial discussions look like run-on rants. Hard to express opinions in anything more than "text bites." Few opinions are one-dimensional and issues are complex.
I share your concern about politicians who will rise to some semblance of statesmanship. In my own disappointment with W, I remain angry at Bill Clinton for his "performance" in office. We Americans of all political stripes deserve a taste of greatness. Good luck to both of our "aisles" as we seek it.
