NP Rank:
Bush official linked to call-girl probe
This is the mark of a good political reporter. Whenever someone anticipates PR at this level you know they're worth reading. Earlier today, Josh Marshall said:
Maybe you've already heard something. Or maybe we'll get the word in the next few hours. But I can't think of a surer sign that the administration will be releasing some information later today that it would rather we all ignored. Who knows? It could be a post-Gonzales testimony DoJ document dump. It might be word of another probe into Rove. Maybe the RNC will be turning over some e-mails. But you can take it to the bank - something's coming down the pike.
And sure enough here is the bombshell:
WASHINGTON - Randall Tobias, head of the Bush administration's foreign aid programs, abruptly resigned Friday after his name surfaced in an investigation into a high-priced call-girl ring, said two people in a position to know the circumstances of his departure.
And if you think this is a small story it's currently the most popular story on Yahoo news.
More fun: Tobias has fessed up to using the escort service but apparently was, um, only getting massages. Can't wait until the blogs go to town on him.
And this is good -- according to Human Rights Watch:
At the July 2004 International AIDS Conference in Bangkok,
U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Randall Tobias attempted to deflect
charges from
AIDS activists that the United States had substituted “abstinence until
marriage” programs for science-based HIV prevention strategies that
included
correct and consistent condom use. Tobias stated that the United
States’ HIV prevention message had been and continued to be “ABC,”
which stands for “Abstain,Be faithful, use Condoms,” in that order. He went on to say,
“Abstinence works, being faithful works, condoms work. Each has its place.” Three
months earlier, however, Tobias had stated that “statistics show that condoms
really have not been very effective.” He added, “It's been the principal
prevention device for the last twenty years, and I think one needs only to look
at what's happening with the infection rates in the world to recognize that it
has not been working.

I think this is an important story and would benefit from other NowPublic contributors working on it. I've flagged it as News Wanted and invite others in relevant locations to look for more evidence.
