NP Rank:
Bush vetos Dems Iraq bill
US President George Bush is just speaking right now, defending his veto of the Democrats' spending bill that would have forced US to end its war in Iraq, based on a scaled timetable linked to Iraqi government accomplishments.
Top soundbite: "Setting a deadline is setting a date for failure."
"Whatever our differences, we have a responsibility to fund our troops," he said. "Our troops deserve better."
Now the whole issue is thrown back to the Democrats.
Top Democrat soundbite:
"The president has put our troops in
the middle of a civil war," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. "Reality on the ground proves what we all know: A change of course is needed."

While not mentioned in the report on CNN today, it was previously reported that the Democats do not believe they have the necessary votes to overrule the President's veto. It will be interesting to see what comes out of their meeting tomorrow.

The Democrats need a 2/3 majority to overide a Presidential veto.
I knew Bush wouldn't budge. He has utter disdain for the will of the people and both houses of Congress have done nothing as he continued to blatantly steal their powers and subsume them into the Executive Branch. Nancy Pelosi in all her "wisdom" took the most important tool in the hands of the Congress to reign in this cowboy President, impeachment, "off the table". Thousands more will die in Iraq for one man's pride, and more US casualties will pile up as the pitiful arguing continues over their partisan nonsense. The Congress is a toothless tiger with no principles, and will either put Impeachment back on the table or buckle like the bunch of cowards they appear to be.
Bush will just continue what he has been doing unless they have the guts to bring him to heal, and muzzle the rabid dog, and the rest of his carnivorous pack!

Per our discussion...I got the quote(s)!
George W. Bush, 4/23/07: "I believe artificial timetables of withdrawal would be a mistake. ... I will strongly reject an artificial timetable withdrawal and/or Washington politicians trying to tell those who wear the uniform how to do their job."
The quotes referenced by Nancy Pelosi:
George W. Bush, 4/9/99, Houston Chronicle: “Victory means exit strategy, and it’s important for the president to explain to us what the exit strategy is.”
George W. Bush, 6/5/99, Scripps Howard/Seattle Post-Intelligencer: “I think it’s also important for the president to lay
out a timetable as to how long they will be involved and when they will
be withdrawn.”
