Chocolate-maker Cadbury Schweppes was fined £1m by a judge at Birmingham Crown Court today following an outbreak of salmonella in the UK and Ireland last summer.
---oOo---
In a case that arose from last year's salmonella scare in Britain and Ireland Cadbury Schweppes Plc. has pleaded guilty to charges of selling unsafe chocolate.
The chocolate was contaminated as the result of a leaking pipe at a Cadbury plant in Marlbrook, Herefordshire.
The contamination led to the recall of more than 1m bars of chocolate.
The company's legal team entered pleas on behalf of the firm at Birmingham Magistrates' Court, following a prosecution brought by Birmingham City Council.
The company claimed it had not believed that there was a threat to health and therefore did not report the incident to the authorities. It now accepted that this approach was incorrect.
