$18 US will buy you a five-hour adventure trek in a Mexican 'theme Park' paying homage to those who leave Mexico to earn money for their families.

Well past midnight you'll find yourself in the mountains of Hidalgo, muddy, cold, exhausted and blind in the dark while lying in a wet ditch under bushes; there will be flood lights and a booming voice calling out to you that it is the US border patrol and kindly reminding you that you have families at home that love you.

Surprisingly enough, the park's intentions have been questioned amid suspicions that it is coaching people on illegal border crossing strategies and coping mechanisms. While there ARE people whispering guidance to you, and actors playing refugees getting caught by the camouflaged 'US Border Patrol' so that you COULD learn from their mistakes, Mr. Bernardino Martin of El Alberto is convinced that his park has given only an adrenaline rush to the 3000 people who have paid for this tour already.

Yikes. I can sort of see why this would be so popular. Many en el norte do not realize that Mexico has a sizeable upper class, which is quite removed from the stereotypical "starving immigrants" who cross the border to reach what they hope are greener pastures. Wanting to see how the other half lives goes both ways. Though miles apart, there is a common denominator between phenomena described in this article and the trend of relatively-well-off hipsters dressing up as so-called "trailer trash".

Interesting concept...I'm interested to see what happens.
