Canada's Military Sets Deadly Trap For Our Young

by moonwolf | April 16, 2007 at 12:25 pm | 703 views | 12 comments

As I stand slack-jawed on my front porch and look out over the recently abandoned cruise ship docks at Ogden Point in Victoria, just days ago thronging with happy fat American tourists, I notice rage boiling up in me like bile as I watch the incomprehensible scene unfolding before my eyes across Dallas Road from my home.

The Canadian Armed Forces have set up Camp “Get Those Young Dumb Recruits” right across the street on the wet tarmac of the harbour, the Olympic Mountains of Washington State a misty backdrop for the production.  Tanks and Armoured Personnel Vehicles rumble about occasionally firing their cannon waking the babies, and spooking the horses that pull the tourist carriages around our lovely city. War ships docked in the slips with all their flags flying lay out the welcome mat for the ignorant, the curious and the unfulfilled.

Strains of old musical marches from the Second World War issue eerily with mock joviality out across the crowds from the puppet-like military band down on the wharf, and the cannons fire again shaking my whole house.  Olive drab tents dot the area as columns of camouflaged human machines march back and forth and again, their weapons like spears ready to drink blood pointing rigidly at the cloudy sky, their boots thumping out the cadence of death on the move.

The harangue from the slick sales team echoes around the area from loudspeakers, as these used war salesmen gesture and hawk the jingoistic lies about life as a soldier, and use the latest psychological techniques, carefully rehearsed to stir and foster the natural atavistic nature and nationalism of our vulnerable young men and women.

“Come join the Team to end all teams! Take control of your life! You and your friends can live a life of adventure and play with our mighty toys.  You can belong even if belonging has never before been available to you.  Just sign here and give your life to a cause greater than yourself and we will take care of you!”

There’s no life like it.  There’s also no death like it, a fact that is downplayed or not mentioned at all as the slick presentation oozes on finally building to its nefarious climax.  With perfect timing the F-18 fighter rifles across the sky, vapour tearing from the leading edges of its wings; a barrel roll, kick in the afterburners, and with deafening thunder the silver killing machine shoots straight up into the clouds.

Stephen Harper and his Conservative Government have set the stage for this mockery using unabashed guile to sweep your children up into a net many cannot resist, nor escape; a net that ends in the dismemberment of their individuality at least, and quite possibly their bodies as well along with the deaths of many others, dark skinned “Taliban Terrorists”, bad guys and their bad families and babies in a distant hazy country far away.  Our boys may get the chance to dip their hands in the blood of innocents and see how the human body looks when it is turned inside out, if they live themselves.

Hundreds of our disenfranchised young, the fruit of the blighted tree of Globalism and “Free” Trade, who cannot afford secondary education and are trapped in the minimum wage slavery of Starbucks World look up wearily, uncomprehending as the jet passes.  They are moved hither and yon by the uniformed men from display to horrific display as the well greased con continues.  I can almost feel their confusion, fear of the future and the disillusionment in their hearts as their eyes follow the sharp edged supersonic weapon tearing into the low cloud cover.

Is this the fear filled future we want to offer our children?  Do we really believe we, through our elected officials, are the High Ones with the moral certitude to decide who will live and who will die in a dusty soulless valley in a wasted desert country in the Middle East?  Is this the national identity that Canada stands for on the world stage and proclaims proudly to the Global Community of Nations?  Endless ranks of olive drab automatons climbing into bloated military aircraft to ply the killing trade at the expense of whoever they are set upon?  What profit is there in a stream of flag draped coffins shat onto runways of military airports around our country, while the bones of the thousands of nameless “enemies” our lost children have killed moulder in heaps or unmarked graves, their families maddened by grief, tearing their clothes and screaming impotently at the deadly sky praying for any opportunity for revenge.

The rage I first felt this morning has been transformed into outrage and a steely resolve by the callous soulless nature of our elected officials as they pursue their thirst for power and control, and a place at the feet of George W. Bush and the debased cabal he represents.  They justify and many die.

This morning on the CBC website was a picture of Stephen Harper, fulminating in Parliament.  He says the bodies coming home are an “unfortunate” price for Canada asserting itself on the world stage.  The story was only there for a few moments and was quickly pulled.  A complaint from our dear leader and the CBC complies removing the offensive piece quickly.  Not good public relations at all!

Stephen, put on a uniform and head to Afghanistan and fight in the blood and the mud alongside our national “heroes” if you are so committed!  If you, dear reader, think for a moment that he would allow his own son to sign up when he reaches recruiting age think again.  The wealthy never die for a cause they simply acquire many poor and ignorant children to do the wet work for them.

My children are too smart to join.  I have taught them well and would not, under any circumstances allow them to follow this deadly course in life regardless of what Stephen Harper mouths in his vain attempts to excuse murder for profit, and let’s make no mistake; this is about the trans-Afghani pipeline, oil, profits, a new "reason" for NATO, and American Hegemony.  It is not the good guys against the bad guys.  It is the bad guys against the other bad guys and the stakes are very high indeed.  Our current government rode into office promising to make the world, Canada and our children safer remember?!

Soon there will be an election and we must act to oust this government.  We need to send our “Defense” Minister, Gordon O’Connor back to his sleazy position as a lobbyist for the Industrial Military Complex, Mr. Harper back to the halls of academia in the hinterlands of Alberta where he belongs, and our besotted Peter McKay into the arms of Condoleeza Rice, or to his retreat in Nova Scotia with his dog.

Stephen Harper’s vision of Canada isn’t mine or my children’s.  If a multi-cultural Canada, filled with free people working together in a world community for the future of all peoples is important to you then it is time for action.  Do not let your children be taken and gobbled up by the military machine of our government. The global money changers who care for nothing but profit, their henchmen in Ottawa, and those whose hearts and souls have died and sit like cold stone within their breasts want your kids to die so that they may reside in luxury and control.

A  brazen voice exhorts the young crowd across the street as I write this and the cannon fire again, and again, and again…….

All that has been gained, giving you the freedom and the comfort to write this piece, will eventually be lost if your point of view takes hold.

moonwolf

Not if you learned anything from history, which you obviously haven't.

Killing Afghanis, rather than keeping Canada free, exposes our citizens all over the world to attacks, and keeps the worn-out thinking that military intervention can solve political problems in place.

Here's a quote that describes your ignorance:

Hermann Goering: <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />Naturally the common people don't want war; neither in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Russia, nor in England, nor in America, nor in Germany. That is understood. But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country. quote verified at snopes.com

Fortunately I can read your comment, since we don't have to speak German here.

Ditto George Walker Bush and all those gullible and unintellectual bozos who think their points of view are best expressed outside fatigues and through the confines of a 'secured' home. If anyone is so impassioned about 'the fruits of freedom gained through war', go get yourself into some fatigues and make your point from Iraq or Aghanistan!

A very well written piece!  I live in Canada, but I am an Amercian citizen.  I have been watching the rhetoric and marketing in Vancouver, coming from the Canadian Armed Forces unfolding all most exactly like it does in the States.  And it is really frightening.  I hope to hear more from great Canadians like yourself who are speaking out.  The debate for this on-going illegal, and immoral war is being framed by marketing firms, hired by the current conservative government.  They seem to be more interested in waving the flag then the children they recruit for the Armed Services.  Thanks for writing!!!

P.S. - You should ignore the war mongers on this site.  They like to make unfounded and childish comments to try and draw you into their infintile arguments mirroring the best the neocons have to offer.

@joellerose

 That trite, vacant, meaningless comment is unworthy of a reply.

@Ego

I'm not sure what you are saying in your comment.  Can you explain further?

good stuff:

moonwolf, this is a well written, thought-provoking piece.

joellerose

Two things are pretty consistent about lefty comments: they never understand satire, and they always have to say that anyone who disagrees with them is ignorant or stupid.  It is a well-written piece.

@Joellerose

Thank you for the compliment and my apologees if I missed the "satire".  I couldn't see the smile on your face.  We won't mention here what is common in "rightee" comments but this dictionary definition of the "C" word should suffice:

Conservative
Tending or disposed to maintain existing institutions; opposed to change or innovation.

I am very curious about a few things here. How it is that the lies Bush told about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq (which we are told was initially the reason American soldiers were sent to Iraq) could still enable the American soldiers to remain there after the weapons were found to be non existant?
More importantly, in Canada, how is it that Bush was/is capable of sending our young men and women to war as well?

moonwolf

There are many reasons, some known, others I would guess, from backroom deals you will never hear about.

Back when Canada declined to take an active role in Iraq, the Liberals, in power at the time, promised to help the USA with "reconstruction and stabilization" in Afghanistan instead.  That's how our young men and women initially got involved.  At the same time NATO, brought into being to counter the Soviet threat during the Cold War, and having nothing to do since Kosovo, was flailing around looking for a raison d'etre, a reason for its existence.  Large military organizations like NATO do not just fade away when there is no real reason for it anymore.  Those in power just create a new one.

Then upon taking power the Conservatives "re-upped" our commitment until 2009 without a vote in the House of Commons.  Though not stated the reasons are fairly transparent.

Think wanting to be buddies with Dubya.  Think trade pressures like the softwood lumber debacle, and political deals cut that support Harper and his Tories at home.

Think about Gordon O'Connor, Canada's "Defense" Minister, formerly a lobbyist for the Military Industrial Complex, and all the lovely new spending we are doing acquiring expensive weapons from his old bosses.

Think about Neocon idealogues like Harper and his crew aligning themselves with the idealogues in the USA.

Think abject cowardice on the part of this government when it comes to standing against the elephant on whose back we in Canada live.

Think the secretive "Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America" negotiations currently being conducted between Canada, Mexico and the USA, which will, undoubtedly, sell us down the river and have Mexico and Canada become inevitably, defacto states in the Union.  Look this up on Google and then if you are a Canadian be afraid, be very afraid.

There are doubtless more reasons why our government continues killing Afghanis and our young on the ground in Afghanistan.

Any Canadian that thinks that it is morality and justice that drives this mission is naive.

joellerose

I think there are still some grownups in Canada who understand what is happening in the world and what must be done about it.
