Car Burgled in Queen Anne Neighborhood, Seattle

Early yesterday morning while walking the dog I spotted three suspicious teenagers meandering down the street peering in the windows of parked cars. I watched them move down the entire block, cross the street and move back up the block looking into car windows. I suspected that they were looking for "opportunistic grabs".

Just then a car drove up and parked in front of one of the houses on the block. I assumed the driver lived at that house because he suddenly jumped out and began exclaiming that his other car, parked on the side of the street, had just been broken into. The contents of his car trunk were strewn about the street. He explained that it must have happened within the hour because he had just returned from a short errand and his car was fine when he had left. I strongly suspected that the perpetrators were the teenagers I had seen moments earlier. If so, they had done it in broad daylight... a half-block from my own house... and they were still in the neighborhood...

I called the Seattle police, who sent out a patrol car to search the neighborhood. I don't know if they found the kids, or if it was even those kids who had actually broken into my neighbor's car. But I can't help but think that I was the first person on the scene just moments after a robbery and I watched the burglars just mosey away. I hated the feeling. Queen Anne residents, lock your doors.

This is true for many areas of Seattle. I lived in Shoreline for 8 years before going to college and my Honda was broken into twice within 2 months. The enfuriating part was that when I mentioned it to one of the girls in my math class, she said, "oh yeah, my boyfriend does that," as if breaking into cars and stealing people's belongings was no big thing.

You are absolutely kidding. I cannot believe that! Here's the really scary part. Again on my walk this morning, I saw the same kids on the same block.
