Change your hair color, change your life

Do you remember the Old Testament story of Samson and Delilah?

Samson was ultra strong because of his long hair. Then he met the harlot, Delilah.

She, as the Bible says, "pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death" to get him to tell her the secret of his strength.

When he finally divulged his secret, Dirty Delilah betrayed him to her people, the Philistines.

Samson was then captured and his eyes were gouged out. They cut his long locks, and consequently, he lost his strength.

Chained to the pillars of a Philistine's house, Samson asked God to grant him strength just one more time. His prayers were heard and he pulled the house in on himself and 3,000 Philistines.

I wouldn't have believed it unless I experienced it myself. I have become Samson.

I have betrayed my signature look of blonde highlights and spiral curls to go back to my brunette roots, and in doing so, I have lost my strength.

My natural hair color has not been seen by human eyes since I was 16.

When I was in high school I used to lighten my hair with lemon juice or hydrogen peroxide. I know better now, but back then I didn't have the money or the sense to let someone who knows what they are doing to color my hair.

After my kids were born, my hair became a dull mouse fur brown-gray. I took the initiative to try my hand at home hair color.

My attempts to color my hair turned me Strawberry Shortcake-Red, except without the sweet fruity scent.

When I tried to color my hair darker, it came out Elvira, Mistress of the Dark-Black.

Frustrated with the grocery store bottle of color, I decided that I was worth the money to have an experienced stylist color my hair.

I love my stylist. She always does exactly what I ask her. She didn't even question me when I asked her to take me back to my roots.

Now that I am a brunette again after so many years, not only have I gone unrecognized, but I've noticed that my physical strength and zest for life have waned.

Could it be that my blonde highlights were what gave me the energy I needed to complete my daily tasks? Could I be a modern day version of Samson?

Since the change from blonde to brunette, I need help unloading the groceries from the car and I get winded carrying my Dyson vacuum up the stairs.

Those are just the physical effects. I've changed emotionally, too. The other day, I opted to watch a documentary on ancient Egypt, instead of my favorite makeover shows.

I used to love dancing around the kitchen to my favorite CDs, now I opt for quiet moments of reflection on the woes of the world.

It seems I have gone from sassy and strong to serious and sedentary with just a cut and color.

I am slowly adjusting to my new look and the physical and emotional changes that have come with it. After all, it is exactly what I asked for, and I do look more sophisticated.

So I guess the old adage is true.

Blondes do have more fun, but brunettes get help carrying their books
