Son preference in India is a key factor responsible for higher fertility


In India preference of son is a well documented phenomenon. An alleged bias of Indian couples is the gender composition of their children, often cited as a key factor responsible for higher levels of fertility. Couples in India tend to have sons, many couples tend to have children to fulfill their desire of son.


  According to National Family Health Survey India’s total fertility rate would fall by about 8% if preference of sons were eliminated. Gender preference is strongest in the northern states of Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana and in the Northern states of Maharashtra.
