I think this is a great concept - it's certainly a great cause.

"Concerned Citizens Rally to Say “No Coal For Christmas!” in Premier Campbell’s Riding

*The problem is serious, but the atmosphere will be festive and
family-oriented when the community meets in Gordon Campbell’s Point Grey
riding to protest plans for coal fired power plants in BC. The event gets
underway at 11 am, Sunday December 10^th at Kits Beach in Vancouver.
Music, hot chocolate, games, speakers, face painting and a “climate
dinosaur” awards ceremony are all planned. It’s hoped Santa will show up
in his zero emission sleigh to lend support and help banish the Grinch.

The event has been planned by a group of neighbours in Campbell’s riding
who are frustrated by the lack of government action on climate change. “We’ve
all been discussing the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and tackle
climate change for some time, “ said organiser Quincy Young. “The decision
to build coal fired power plants just doesn’t make any sense -- is our
government in complete denial of the problem? We decided we needed to do
something to express our frustration and show our concern.”

“We know the general public is concerned about global warming,” says group
spokesperson Donald Gordon. “But government inaction leaves people to sigh
and hope that turning off lights will help. Unfortunately, this isn’t
enough when both provincial and federal government policies add megatonnes
of carbon dioxide to Canada’s already sky-high emissions.

We invite anyone who is concerned to bring the whole family, enjoy some
holiday cheer, and join us in demanding that all levels of government take
action now. Pushing government to make sure our kids have a healthy
environment to grow up in is the best present we can give them.”

The group will also be announcing the winner of their first “Climate
Dinosaur" award at the event. Nominees include:

· Federal Environment Minister Rona Ambrose, for announcing before the
global community that the Harper government supports everything about the
Kyoto Protocol “except the greenhouse gas reduction targets; and
· BC Energy Minister Richard Neufeld, for proposing to add obsolete coal
fired power plants to BC’s energy production portfolio."

I like this story, Kate, not only because it represents a good cause. This is the kind of story that is a natural for NP. The efforts of these people represent the kind of neighborhood organization that would not get much coverage in the mainstream media, but deserve it. And what could be better than a Christmas story in which a group gives (or gives up) something, rather than buying, taking, or shifting the costs of some of our daily atrocity to someone else? Well done!
