I just got off the phone with NowPublic's very own TheArgus, who brought us some incredible eyewitness photos of the forest fires in New Jersey. While on the way to work, this gentleman found himself in the middle of a world exclusive: he was one of the first people on the scene, and was called upon to direct traffic; someone's gotta do it. He was then brought to the nearby township to help evacuate neighboring towns. During the course of this all-day all-night work, TheArgus was able to bring us this amazing coverage.

The Associated Press, which maintains a relationship with NowPublic, got wind of the pictures attached to the article and wanted to use them as part of global news distribution. Via one if NowPublic's managing editors, AP purchased from TheArgus the high-res versions of the photos that they wanted to use, and TheArgus stepped into citizen-journalism history. With his modest point-and-shoot digicam, our citizen reporter was able to do what no DSLR-equipped photojournalist could have done under the circumstances, simply as a function of his daily routine and of doing his civic duty. Something newsworthy was taking place and one person was there with a camera and an inquisitive mind, bringing us, and the world, some breathtaking photos and superb first-person coverage.

Ultimately, this is what NowPublic is all about: you, the contributors sharing with the rest of us your experiences when you witness or take part in newsworthy events.

As illustrated above, NowPublic contributors can actually get paid for their work with us: if you bring in an image or story or article that AP needs, they will indeed pay you for it. Just promise that you'll remember us when you're an Internet news superstar.

By the way, during the course of the telephone interview TheArgus provided me
with an update: meteorologists predict 50mh winds ahead of a storm
front heading towards the site of the fire. This guy never rests.

Plus, as a former CBS/CNN/Reuters Reporter/Photographer/Videographer, it looks like I'll start carrying my digital cam corder and still camera around with me again. Maybe I can help...

I think that by having ordinary citizens not only reporting, but being able to get their story out to the major newswires like AP and their ilk, is definitely a great thing.
