The blast left only the bell tower standing and flames were coming from a next door house. A firefighter told the TV station there was an initial call at 1:19 pm. reporting a strong odor of gas and about a minute later the church exploded.
Several houses and a local daycare were evacuated. The First Baptist Church was built in 1912 or 1913. "We will rebuild," church member Beth Jennings said. "We will do whatever it takes to keep our ministry here."
