I live and work in a small Vancouver Community known as Commercial
Drive or the Drive. The community itself centers on a long strip
of street named, you guessed it, Commercial Drive. In the last
couple of years this community has become a must see here in
Vancouver. The strip is lined with shops, restaurants, bars,
bookstores, and alternative smoking facilities.
The best time of year to visit is of course the summer months.
The question is will the strip be ready for the summer or remain in
construction mania for longer than anticipated. And if it does
how will the attitudes change of residents who are content in these
slow winter months.
As I write this story the streets are being torn up along the East side
of the road, and next the West side. People, who live here seem
to take the noise stress, dust, melting asphalt smells, and honking in
stride. I have heard many mixed reactions. From jokes about
borrowing the construction equipment at night, to the have joking
musing s about the endless waking mornings of jackhammer singing, and
the often more times than not, shrugged shoulder, and quiet acceptance
of the job that must be done.
But those who use the Drive as a short cut for their daily commute seem
to be increasingly irate. The traffic is terrible for such
a small area. And drivers seem eager to run you down if you dare
cross their path. This simply will not do in an area, which
prides itself on Pedestrian supremacy. I have a feeling
that the continued congestion could lead to more than a few accidents
or pedestrian - driver run- INS. I have worked for a city
unit. I highly doubt a timely completion is in our future.
Will the people of this small community be so quiet in the summer?
We will have to see... Until then, it is back to the dust, and
honking as you grab a veggie sausage, and a beer for the Olympic Hockey
Game.
All stories about Canada must include random Hockey reference to be taken seriously...
