This technology is in fact quite old. It has been used for over 5 years in Japan and certainly for up to three years in various western markets.

Shotcodes used it as part of a Heiniken campaign and Semacode in the US has been used for tourist trails, museums and community treasure hunts. There are others with their own forms of the technology.

I have been looking at getting the technology into the Australian/Asian market for 18 months but a hurdle to be overcome is having it on phones when shipped. Trying to get people to become aware and then download the app is an exercise in frustration. Nokia does not return calls ...

Also the technology developers are normally techs, not marketers and have yet to devise (or understand) a good model that allows a reseller network with reveune.
