Cougars Drop Five-Set Marathon to Calgary
REGINA, Sask. - The University of Regina's women's
volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (28-26, 23-25, 25-18, 20-25,
15-10) decision on Friday night to the No. 2-ranked Calgary
Dinos at the U of R's Centre for Kinesiology, Health &
Sport.
The Dinos took the first set by a 28-26 score, receiving
six kills from outside hitter Joanna Niemczewska. One of
Niemczewska's six kills was the final point in the first
frame, as she powered an attack off a Cougar block to
clinch the set.
The second set went to the Cougars. Fifth-year setter
Jennifer Prokopetz picked a fine time to record her 3,000th
career regular-season assist, achieving the milestone when
she set up Tammy Jule for the set-clinching kill.
The teams split the third and fourth sets to set up a fifth
and deciding game. In the final set, the teams traded
points before the Dinos pulled away for good just past the
midway portion of the game.
For the third time this season, Calgary's Joanna
Niemczewska exceeded the 25-kill barrier, converting on 26
of 52 total attacks during the match. She ended up with a
match-high .385 hitting percentage. She added 12 digs to
record the match's lone double-double.
Brittany Hutton's 57 assists for the Dinos is the highest
single-match output in a Canada West conference match this
year. She also recorded eight digs.
Tammy Jule had a team-high 23 kills for the Cougars and hit
.378 for the match. Prokopetz dished out 54 assists in a
losing cause for Regina.
Friday's match was the first time this regular season that
Regina has gone to a fifth set.
The loss drops the No. 9-ranked Cougars to 3-6 on the
season. Calgary improves to 9-2.
The two teams will play again tonight. Match time
is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. and will commence following the
conclusion of the men's game.
