NP Rank:
33 Murderers Have Own Cars At Prisons.
The ultimate in prison status, your own Aston Martin car. An 8X10 cell, three square meals a day, a TV, games and all expenses paid by the taxpayers.
A Derbyshire politician has spoken out in Parliament against a decision to allow prisoners to have their own cars.West Derbyshire MP Patrick McLoughlin raised the issue after a Sudbury inmate, triple killer Martyn Hughes, absconded and was found dead in his vehicle earlier this month.
The 49-year-old was discovered on farmland in an area known as Coneygrave Hillock, near Alderwasley, on September 3, with a hosepipe running from the exhaust into the car.
It was later revealed that Hughes, who killed his wife, Deborah Brachahn-Hughes, and murdered his two stepsons, James, seven and Matthew, six, was one of up to 30 prisoners at Sudbury who had cars. Chris Davidson, governor at the open prison, defended the decision and said it was primarily to allow them to travel to work placements.
But Mr McLoughlin raised the issue in a written Parliamentary question, and it was revealed on Monday that more than 200 inmates across the country, including 33 killers, had been given permission to have their own cars.

The prison is in Ashbourne, Derbyshire, a picturesque small market town situated at the southern tip of the Peak District. Beautiful countryside and a perfect setting for filming, 'Prisoner on the run'.
