Since the implementation of Bill 206 in Alberta last year, police have impounded 114 cars driven by men allegedly looking for sex on the streets.
New legislation allows police to seize vehicles from men accused of soliciting sex. Men can get their vehicles back and avoid court by agreeing to alternative measures programs that involve community service and donations to agencies that help sex trade workers.
Accused men who choose to go to court and are convicted end up forfeiting their vehicles.
Regardless of the ultimate outcome, having to tell a spouse, parent or boss why police seized your vehicle in the first place serves as a good deterrent, Calgary vice investigators said.
