Canadians Speak out on Honour Killings
Opinion
Barry Artiste, Now Public Contributor
These media comments from ordinary Canadians across Canada certainly contradict what seems to amount to ethnic vote grabbing Politicians and some in the Public who wear Blinders and state Nothing wrong here, all is well in our Multi Cultural and Diverse Politically Correct society. It speaks volumes about those in the Political and Public arena who are so unclear of the concept on what it is like for a Muslim woman or any woman for that matter to live in fear under one roof of a family members strict and sometimes fatal rules. If we are going to be a Multicultural and Diverse Society, then we need to rid the word Political Correctness, as this implies if it is a cultural thing, then it is acceptable.
A footnote: The Citizens of Herouxville, Quebec stated in 2006 in their "Town Charter" about Honour Killings of women by certain cultures, only to suffer the slings and arrows of Racism, Bigotry and other venonous diatribes from what seem to be by Ethnic vote grabbing Grandstanding Canadian Politicans who felt one Honour Killing was an exception to the rule and one can assume acceptable, judging by their inaction.
One exception is Unacceptable in my Opinion.
One Muslim woman Deeyah speaks out against repression of Muslim women, Why? because there are many Muslim women who can't out of fear of death.

The father should be charged with first-degree murder, nothing less. Perhaps Canada has become too lenient with immigrants wishing to keep their own cultural, especially their religious beliefs of dealing with things they do not agree with. He committed murder because of a piece of clothing. Utterly ridiculous and not acceptable in Canada!

I am so sorry for what happend to this girl, and i belive that Islam not treatment lifestyle by this way. Quran forever say treat pepole with the good way, even in high situation like "Zeinah" sex for man or women non marriage , Quran not say punich but say treat.
my opinion this father before he punich his doughter with this bad way ,he must first read quran and understand it very well to know how treat the doughter.
May Allah Bless this Girl.Amin

While I am not against immigration from other countries, if immigrants to Canada want to move here for "the better life", then they should accept the changes in culture. In this case, he did not and his daughter paid with her life. Put him in jail and leave him there so he does not have any other children. God bless the child.

If a person is intent on keeping their old world ways it may be best if they remained in that country where female slavery and child abuse are accepted.

Barry:
You're raising some great points about repression. Be conscious not to take a wee bit too much liberty and painting all Muslims with a big fat "you're all the same brush."
This victim came from a very conservative Pakistani background, as does the person, Deeyah, you make reference to in your posting.
The 'Muslim culture' (if there is there one) as you put is are as diverse as for example as the English speaking world, or as diverse as the 'Christian culture' (if there is one). I would find it odd to read about world events, or events in Canada, the US, or others under the heading of "Today's events in Christianity." I doubt many many Canadians have much coordination and religious solidarity in common with let's say others in Malawi, Madagascar or South Africa, or with the US Republican Party, all predominantly 'Christian entities'. I would bet that your reasoning if applied to horrible crimes that occur there, or made by those entities here in Canada would not be addressed in religious terms, as the Asqa crime is being addressed by you as a Muslim one.
The Aqsa tragedy is a cultural crime perpetrated by a conservative and religious Pakistani father. Period. There are many Muslims that are shocked at has occurred here in Canada. Furthermore, it may be shocking to know that there are actually progressive examples within the Muslim world, such as Turkey, negotiating for European Union membership who defines itself not by its faith as certain countries do, but by its nationality. As an FYI, Turkey enshrined in its laws, constitution and its daily application of those laws, an equality between genders (including the right to vote), before Canada, the US and most of the Western world. This at a time, when Canada was still debating whether women should be referred to as 'persons'. Bosnia is another example of a modern, secular, and tolerant European Muslim nation, and who has sent many refugees and immigrants to Canada without incident, and who is making great progress in its nation building, after, incidentally, being blown to bits by two neighbouring Christian countries (one of whom used the anti-islamic, 'I am doing European security a favor' boogey man pretext to do so). Both Turkey and Bosnia, developing nations, imperfect as they are, have the majority of their women uncovered, who have women who are the majority of doctors, lawyers and judges within their respective countries, and in the case of Turkey, has had an elected female Prime Minister (unlike Canada's selected female Prime Minister). Both of these countries are not without the struggle of reconciling their daily lives with their religious beliefs, but they do show that a modern Muslim outlook does not need to always reside with repression and end in tragedy or broken lives.
Just to recap: Muslim cultural diversity is as great as is the English speaking world, and that diversity is represented even here in Canada. Barry, you raise some great and sobering points about the tragedy and the larger topic of integration (not assimiliation). Keep them coming! Just be conscious that you dont whitewash many of those Muslims who would agree with you.

Thanks for your comments Doctor Ok, you do raise some important issues as well, of which I am grateful.
I would like to direct you to please read my last post on "Culture Clash Proves Deadly" I wrote yesterday, in it you will find I state that it is the few (Muslim fanatics) and not Muslims generally per say. There are many middle eastern countries predominately Muslim who have no problem with Catholics or Jews building Churches and Synagogues and practising their faith, Iran is one example of tolerance believe it or not, and Iraq under Saddam. Pakistan is not as forgiving.
In ending, you should know I never paint one culture's mistakes with one brush, just the insane zealots of all religious affiliations who state non believers, infidels and uncovered women have no place on this earth, are cattle and or deserve to be raped and subjugated. Most here on Now Public who know me through my many columns on this subject and similar stories on here know I am fair and balanced in my reporting most times, unless I have good reason otherwise. As for Females of the Muslim persuasion who know too well of oppressive religions in their culture, they have witnessed and or experienced unimaginable horrors we can never comprehend as males.
CBC (Behind the Lens) in fact was in numerous villages inTurkey and, yes, even Bosnia 23 years ago (approx) for 6 months interviewing various Muslim women of all ages in villages throughout asking them if they felt oppressed? With their husnbands nervously standing on the other side of the room and within earshot, the Women declared Life was Good to which the husbands nodded in agreement to their wives assessment. The CBC producers sensing the collective verbatim "Life is Good" statement from all women, requested the men leave the room, the men complied and stood outside the house, smoking and discussing heatedly, with much arm raising among themselves. Though as a viewer I could not understand their language, it did not take a Rockey Scientist in Linguistics to figure out they were a tad pissed for good reason. CBC re-interviewed these same women and the story was a 180 degree turn of events among these women as most women in even Western Society will attest when congregating amongst themselves. The women though still religous found the male founded and dominated Islamic religion is grieviously interpreted by Idiotic Imans who spew their own twisted interpretation to their illiterate and literate followers. The male followers then take this as gospel and proceed to treat their women as such.
Asked whether they were happy with their husbands, most agreed they were, though many sarcastically critized their husbands, their traits, slovenly ways, inability to child rear etc. Asked whether their husbands adhered to the strict islamic code, as the Husbands demand their wioves adhere to. The women greeted the CBC producer with gales of laughter, some with tears of laughter. So in ending my Good Doctor, I always like to think I do my homework before stating a Fact and reporting on it. As for Female Presidents and Prime Ministers or even Politicians for that matter, that too is my preference, though I would hope most would be for these Women to be Mothers, including Muslim Mothers. Why? Mothers, above all people have the life experience Males do not have, as what (giving Birth) their children mean to them, thus wars and hate would be ultimately a Non Issue. Enuff said!

I do not agree with the statement that Muslim diversity is as great as in the English world. Let's face it. Islam fundamentally treats women as second class citizens subservient to men. It is a totalitarian religion that demands obedience to the letter of "the law." If anybody practices it other than the way it's practiced let's say in Saudi Arabia, that's because he/she doesn't really believe in all the precepts of religion at the risk of facing retribution from those that do. It's true that Turkey has made a lot of progress in modernization thanks to its secularist revolution in the 1920's, but the secularists have always been labelled infidels and kuffar by pious Muslims. With the religous party in power Turkey is now facing increasing pressure to turn back the clock. More and more women are persuaded or coerced by social pressure to cover themselves up and to abide by other requisites of religion. It's only the army that's holding the country from going back to the Middle Ages. For now...

Barry Artiste, you've convinced me you've done the work - it's authentic. I also think that you've been fair and thorough. I didn't get the sense that you were hiding your biases, or passing off other's work as your own. Or worse -- getting paid by those you cover -- so it's transparent and independent. I also think you deserve praise for being an eyewitness, and for your investigative efforts. Good stuff.
