To the North Dakota sheriff who helped put killer Richard Lee McNair in prison for life, news of his recapture in Canada on Thursday ranks as a highlight in a long policing career.
"This is one of the few (cases) that I wanted to see cleared up before I retired," Ward County Sheriff Vern Erck said from Minot, North Dakota. "I appreciate everything everybody's done in Canada to get him."
McNair, 48, had been on the run since April 5, 2006, when he literally mailed himself out of a maximum-security Louisiana prison by wrapping himself inside a pallet of postal bags being sent out for delivery.
