"We have to be strict. Foreign fishing boats or any foreign ship entering or operating in Indonesian waters illegally will be sunk," he said after witnessing the signing of an agreement on Standard Operating Procedures between his ministry, the National Police and the Navy.
Freddy said, illegal fishing in Indonesia was causing a financial loss of Rp30 trillion a year to the state. The amount was equal to 1.6 million tons of fish or some 25 percent of the country`s total fishery potential.
He rejected the view that the measure would violate human rights.
"They enter Indonesian territory without permission and in violation of our regulations," he said.
