A number of Indonesian women from rural areas had become victims of human trafficking crimes in Japan as they had been cheated to work in Japan with high salaries but instead they had been forced to work as prostitutes.

Both Japan and Indonesia were aware of a possible involvement of an international criminal syndicate in the human trafficking crimes in Japan.

The Japanese immigration office has issued a warning on the increasing human trafficking crimes in Japan, especially involving female victims from Asian, East European, Russian and Central Asian countries.
